The Amazing Deer 255 is Still Migrating
In 2016, researchers in Wyoming discovered the world's longest migration of mule deer. A doe fitted with a GPS tracking collar migrated 242 miles one way.
Importantly, this story map illustrates how migrations of all lengths are biologically important, and how migration mapping can help managers develop conservation strategies and plan for urban and energy development.
Deer 255 passes within 5-miles of Pitchstone Waters Ranch, which is 5-miles southwest of Yellowstone Park’s southwest corner (see map below video).

From WMI:
This fall we released a new animation featuring Deer 255’s spring 2022 migration. Since we first set eyes on this deer in 2016, we’ve tracked 10 of her migrations across more than 2,100 miles between the Red Desert and the Tetons, and she’s outlived many other deer we have tracked.
(View the latest animation on YouTube.)
Individuals like Deer 255 help reveal the larger story of migration in the changing American West. In partnership with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) we produced an immersive Story Map following Deer 255’s fall migration route from end to end.
